Hunters Creek Tree Service for a Planned Community

Hunters Creek is an unincorporated, master-planned community in Orange County, about 15 miles south of downtown Orlando. Genstar Development began planning it on about 3,840 acres in the mid-1980s, and most of the homes went up in the late 1980s and 1990s. John Young Parkway runs north to south through the middle, Town Center Boulevard crosses it, and SR-417 and Florida's Turnpike frame the east and west sides. Osceola County starts just past the southern edge.

The community is organized into villages, each with its own entrance and streetscape, under the Hunter's Creek Community Association. Lake Calabay, a dredged lake, sits inside it, and Hunter's Creek Golf Club runs through the center. Small neighborhood parks such as Eagle Park and Osprey Park are tucked between the villages, and the Shingle Creek corridor runs along the west side.

Hunters Creek Tree Removal and Aging Planted Oaks

A lot of the trees here were planted by builders at the same time, often the same few species, and they are reaching middle age together. Laurel oaks planted in the late 1980s are now at the point where internal decay starts. Live oaks set in narrow strips between the sidewalk and curb have pushed up concrete and grown heavy limbs over driveways. Slash pines left along pond edges and golf holes have gotten tall, thin and exposed to wind.

The ground is the same flat, sandy flatwoods soil found across south Orange and north Osceola. Builders graded each village around retention ponds, and many backyards end at a pond bank or a fairway. The water table rises fast in summer, which keeps roots shallow. Our article on tree roots, pool decks and foundations covers why those shallow roots also lift pavers and crack pool decks.

Storms have tested these villages before. Hurricane Charley in 2004 crossed Osceola and Orange counties with strong winds and broke a lot of planted oaks and pines across south Orange, and the trees that came through it are larger and heavier now. Ian in 2022 brought days of rain instead, which softened the ground under oaks next to ponds. A pass through the yard before June, looking for dead limbs, split forks and pines that have started to lean, is the cheapest storm insurance a Hunters Creek homeowner can buy.

Hunters Creek Villages and Streets We Work In

  • Timucua Village: established homes with mature oaks over roofs and pool screens.
  • Calabay Cove: lots around Lake Calabay where shoreline trees lean toward the water.
  • Heather Glen and Hunters Isle: single-family streets where front-yard laurel oaks are now large enough to need regular structural pruning.
  • Braddock Oaks: named for its trees; heavy live oak canopies and limbs over drives.
  • Golf course edges: homes along Hunter's Creek Golf Club with tall slash pines and open wind exposure.
  • Town Center Boulevard and John Young Parkway: commercial and multi-family properties where trees over parking lots and signs need clearance.

Tree Trimming in Hunters Creek: What We Usually Do

Most Hunters Creek calls are about clearance and weight. We cut limbs back from pool cages, roof lines and second-story windows, thin heavy live oaks so wind can pass through, and remove dead wood from laurel oaks before it lands on a car. Removals tend to be laurel oaks with decay, pines that have started to lean after a storm, and trees that have outgrown a small side yard. Space between houses is often only a few feet, so we climb and rope pieces down rather than drop them.

For electric service, Duke Energy serves much of Hunters Creek. If a branch is touching a line or the service drop to your house, contact the utility before anyone climbs. We confirm the provider for your address and plan around the lines.

Orange County Tree Rules and HOA Approval in Hunters Creek

Hunters Creek falls under Orange County's tree protection rules in Chapter 15 of the county code, which were revised in 2023 and took effect in March 2024. According to the county's own permit guidance, a single-family lot needs a tree removal permit when the property is over two acres with an occupied home, or when the lot is vacant. Typical Hunters Creek lots are well under two acres, so a county permit usually is not required, but we confirm on every estimate.

The association is the bigger hurdle here. Community associations in planned developments like this one commonly require approval for exterior changes, and tree removal or new plantings can fall under that review. Check your village's guidelines before scheduling, or let us know and we will help you prepare what they ask for. If a certified arborist documents that the tree is a danger, Florida Statute 163.045 limits what Orange County can require, but it does not cancel private HOA covenants.

Hunters Creek Tree Removal Cost

Because houses are close together and backyards are fenced, most removals here are climbing jobs with rigging. A medium laurel oak in the 30 to 60 foot range usually comes to $900 to $1,900. A tall pine on a golf edge or a large live oak over a two-story roof can reach $1,900 to $3,800 or more, and a crane adds $600 to $1,800 when the tree cannot be lowered safely by rope. Routine pruning on a single tree typically runs $200 to $950, and cabling a split live oak instead of removing it costs $350 to $1,200.

Hunters Creek Tree Services We Offer

We provide tree trimming and pruning for clearance and structure, tree removal for failing laurel oaks and leaning pines, and stump grinding so the HOA sees a clean, level lawn. For valuable oaks with weak forks, ask about cabling and bracing, and before June we can handle hurricane tree prep for the whole lot.

Questions

Questions About Tree Work in Hunters Creek

Hunters Creek is unincorporated Orange County. Addresses use Orlando and ZIP 32837, but the city of Orlando does not govern it. The Osceola County line is just to the south. For tree work that means Orange County rules plus the Hunter's Creek Community Association guidelines, not City of Orlando or Osceola County rules.

Usually not for a typical home. Orange County's guidance says single-family lots need a permit when they are over two acres with an occupied home, or when the lot is vacant. Most Hunters Creek lots are much smaller. Rules do get revised, so we check the current county guidance for your address before we start.

Plan on asking. Planned communities like Hunters Creek commonly review exterior changes, which can include tree removal and replanting, and some villages have their own guidelines. Call the association or check your village documents before the work is scheduled. We can supply a written description of the work and photos for your application.

Many were planted when the villages were built in the late 1980s and 1990s, so they are reaching the age when laurel oaks often develop internal decay. They can look full and green while the trunk or a main fork is hollowing out. We look for cracks, cavities, fungus and dead tops, and recommend pruning, cabling or removal based on what we find.

Yes. Limbs over screen enclosures are one of our most common Hunters Creek jobs. We climb the tree and lower each cut by rope so nothing drops on the screen or frame. We leave enough clearance that the branches will not rub in wind, and we blow leaves and debris off the cage and deck when we finish.

First find out whether the tree is on your lot or in a common area or right-of-way, because that decides who can act. Root pruning can help in some cases, but cutting large roots on one side can make a tree unstable. We assess the tree and give you options, from selective root work to removal and replanting with a smaller species.

Most Hunters Creek removals land between $900 and $1,900 for a medium tree, because tight side yards and fences mean climbing and rigging. Small ornamental trees can be $350 to $900, and very large oaks or pines over a house can reach $3,800 or more. Stump grinding is priced separately, usually $100 to $450 per stump.

We work on trees on private lots that back onto Hunter's Creek Golf Club. Trees on the course itself belong to the club, so we would need its permission. Tall slash pines along fairways catch a lot of wind, and we often thin or remove them for homeowners worried about them falling toward the house.
